The Red Turtle

The film feels like it belongs in one of those dark rooms you come across at an art museum where you’re like, “What’s in here?” you go in to find some hallucinogenic art film, really dig it, but after 5 or 10 minutes, you think, “Whelp, I’ve had enough of that. Moving on…” Warning: This film has no dialogue. None. It’s a moving work of art, but should be the backdrop at a cocktail party. After a man is stranded on a deserted island, a turtle prevents him from leaving, the turtle is actually a girl, they have a baby, and you see the stages of human life unfold, the man living out the last stages paralleling the boy living out the first stages. It’s a lovely, flowing, beautiful film… That belongs hanging in an art gallery and not really in at theater.
