Deepwater Horizon

Another entry into the spate of recent “incident review” films, Deepwater follows the key players on the eponymous rig during its catastrophic blowout and explosion in April of 2010, sinking two days later after the fire was uncontrolled and leading to the largest oil disaster in American history. Or hadn’t you heard? Mark Wahlberg is the lead in this predictable explosion action flick. It’s not bad. But I just don’t know what the point is. There’s no untold story here. BP failed to maintain safety standards and a catastrophe occurred. Not sure why anyone needs to see a play-by-play. Better to go read a book. Although as a footnote, I’ll say this: Don’t be so in love with your sound effects and making sure your viewer knows that it’s loud (Question: Is ANYONE unaware that helicopters and explosions are loud nowadays?) that I have to watch the damn film with subtitles on just to understand the tiny fragment of information the film provides in dialogue that I might not already know from the news and may be relevant to the thin plot. Just sayin’…
