Woody, Buzz, and friends return for another exciting adventure when Bonnie creates a toy from a spork and our well-loved gang needs to convince Forky that he’s loved and not trash. All the pieces are there, and the animation is Pixar-standard exceptional, but the film simply doesn’t soar. We didn’t need another Toy Story, we didn’t want another Toy Story, but damn it, it’s too profitable for us to not get one. Despite the dazzlingly rich animation (Pay particular attention to the antiques store and the carnival) and high-flying action sequences, the real magic of Toy Story is missing, Forky is never endearing and the characters we love for their warmth, humanity, and sharp humor are all but missing. Yea, they’re there, but they’re too busy being whipped around to develop more. This installment just became an animated action film. The premise of Woody wondering what his place in the world is could have really been fantastic, but it was neglected. Still, it’s Toy Story. See it because you know you can’t resist.
