Life, Animated

If this film doesn’t cause you to shed a tear, you may actually be made of stone. It really should be a litmus test. A documentary melding archival family footage, interviews, and animation, the story follows a family as their 3-year-old boy disappears into an autism diagnosis, until they discover they can communicate with him through the lines of Disney films. It’s beautiful and heartbreaking to watch the love this family has for each other and the struggles the young man still confronts every day despite his triumphs. The role that Disney films themselves play in this film is fascinating. Disney is the juggernaut that it has become for being able to simply and captivatingly portray the basic human emotions with perfect clarity in generations of films. That a young man imprisoned by autism could communicate with his family through these films allows the viewer to experience a deep empathy with those suffering from an often misunderstood disease. For those in the arts who can think they’re work isn’t as meaningful as other more noble professions, this movie shows that film and the arts can save lives. And this film is a must watch.
