Jackie

I’m really not sure what all the fuss is surrounding this film. Yes, Portman’s portrayal of Jackie is physically flawless, but lends no depth to the situation. There must be a reason to tell this story again. I’m not sure there is any moment in this country’s history that more Americans know the intimate details of than the murder of President John Kennedy and this film lends no new nuance to it. Now, I realize that I am not a historical expert on Jackie Kennedy, but it seems there are only two options here. Either the filmmakers never really get into the true character of Mrs. Kennedy, making this a historical puff piece, or she really was fairly flat and vapid, in which case one doesn’t need to dedicate a few hours of film to a few days of her life. I do not mean to seem insensitive here, but that’s exactly the point. If providing an intimate portrait of a woman who had her husband murdered while sitting next to her with the entire world watching allows no empathy for the character, then the film must be considered a failure.
