This film is actually two films. The first reflects the title and is a documentary about the wild beasts of the wizarding world. There is virtually no plot and the main characters are introduced with virtually zero likability; however, the creatures really are quite fantastic! The film seems to remember that it is actually supposed to be a narrative and not a NatGeo special somewhere about half way through, the characters warm, the plot picks up, and the beasts, well… They’re still fantastic. It’s a fun romp through the Wizarding World of Harry Potter and any day I get to see a platypus rob a jewelry store is a good day for sure, but JK Rowling is either still getting her sea legs in areas other than writing or writing for the screen simply isn’t her strong suit. Either way, it’s still worth a watch because, well, did I mention the platypus?
