Late Night

If you start watching this film and feel like you’ve seen it before, you have. It was called The Devil Wears Prada and this late-night television version rip-off of the Meryl Streep/Anne Hathaway comedy fails to deliver. Mindy Kaling wrote and starred in this comedy that plays on the same old tropes, clueless wide-eyed dipshit girl manages to land high-performing job otherwise occupied by misogynistic nitwits who she miraculously manages to outperform because she knows how to Google. Dragon lady boss is about to be toppled from her throne when dipshit saves the day and melts the ice queen’s heart, or something like that. Why does anyone give Mindy Kaling money? She’s not funny. Granted, the film does have a few laugh out loud moments, but overall it treads the same ground. However, watch it to see Emma Thompson absolutely crack it out of the park with a witty, ruthless, human, warm, relentless, funny performance as late-night talk show host Katherine Newberry. It should be no surprise that Thompson, even given such a weak script, brings Newberry to life in a truly compelling way. In my imaginary fantasyland, Thompson sent a screener to Streep with a Kiefer Sutherland quote attached, “Now this is how it’s done.” See it to watch Thompson shine.
